The season is almost over for Sandro Tonali (23). The midfielder has been suspended for ten months by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for illegal betting. He is said to have bet on his former clubs AC Milan and Brescia, among others. Particularly bitter: this means that the national player will miss the European Championship in the summer of 2024.
As Fabrizio Romano writes, the verdict is almost final. “Sources confirm the information, only the statement from the Italian association is still pending,” says the transfer expert on X (formerly Twitter).
Has Newcastle filed a lawsuit against Milan?
In addition to his ban, Tonali must undergo another eight months of therapy for his gambling addiction. It is unclear whether a fine will follow.
Tonali, who moved from Milan to Newcastle this summer for €70 million, made a self-report when he heard about the investigation by the prosecutor in Turin. By his cooperation he avoided a multi-year ban that could be imposed for such a crime.
It is still unclear how his new club Newcastle will deal with the suspension. As Corriere dello Sport reports, the Premier League team is also considering a lawsuit against Tonali’s former club Milan, claiming that the Rossoneri may have known about the Italian’s gambling addiction.
Fagioli is already banned
Tonali could play his last match of the current season on Wednesday (9 p.m.). Then the Magpies meet Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. As of now, he would still be eligible to play in the game.
In addition to Tonali, two other Italian professionals are at the center of the investigation into the gambling scandal: Juve player Nicolò Fagioli (22) and Aston Villa legionnaire Nicolò Zaniolo (24). The former has already been banned by the FIGC for seven months, plus a fine of 12,500 euros. It is still unclear what punishment Zaniolo will receive. (mab)
