About a week before the start of the season in Sölden, Austria mourns the loss of a skiing legend. Heinrich Messner died at the age of 84.
The Tyrolean wrote a piece of skiing history in 1967 when he won the first World Cup race. The slalom triumph in Berchtesgaden (De) was also his only victory. He won bronze at the 1968 Olympic Games in the giant slalom and in the downhill in 1972. Because these were also counted as World Championships, there were also two World Championship medals. He won third place in 1968 in the combination, in which there was no Olympic competition.
After a total of 50 World Cup races and 17 podium finishes, Messner ended his career in March 1972. He subsequently became a coach and, among other things, managed the Austrian women’s team for two years. During this time he was significantly involved in the successes of drivers such as Annemarie Moser-Pröll (70) and Wiltrud Drexel (73). (beer)
