Carlos Alcaraz will not participate in Basel.

Disappointment for Swiss tennis fans: Top seed Carlos Alcaraz (20, ATP 2) cancels his participation in the ATP 500 tournament in Basel on Wednesday. The Spaniard is struggling with inflammation in the sole of his left foot and problems in the buttocks area, Swiss Indoors reports.

Tournament chairman Roger Brennwald regrets the cancellation: “Such news, as we know it from previous years, obviously hits us hard. But cancellations due to injuries are not in our control.”

Swiss advantage

Stan Wawrinka (38, ATP 46) from Vaud fills the gap in the main field left by Alcaraz’s withdrawal. The Swiss moves higher on the list of participants. Instead of Wawrinka, Leandro Riedi (21, ATP 159) receives a wild card for the tournament in Basel.

Despite the cancellation, tournament chairman Brennwald is satisfied with the tournament setup: “Fortunately, the density of the tournament is excellent this year. An exciting clash with 15 players from the top 30 in the world is still guaranteed.

The draw for the main tournament will take place this Saturday at 4 p.m. The two Swiss Marc-Andrea Hüsler and Mika Brunold are on the field in qualifying, which also starts on Saturday. It is Brunold’s debut on the international stage. (jsl)
