Boris Becker (55) has supervised the most important tennis tournaments in the world in recent years as a TV expert for BBC and Eurosport. Now he could soon be back in the stands as a coach.
Holger Rune (20), number five in the world, posted a photo with his entourage on Saturday. Also in the photo: Boris Becker. The German supported Rune during his training week in Monaco, where he is preparing for the upcoming ATP tournaments in Stockholm (Sweden) and Basel.
“Watch how it develops”
The very talented Danish tennis professional is still waiting for his big hit. Who better to help than Becker, who already had success at a young age (two-time Wimbledon winner at the age of 19)?
“There was good chemistry between him and my son. They look alike, both became tennis professionals at a young age,” Aneke Rune, the right-hander’s mother, told Danish television. “We will see how this develops.”
Most recently Rune worked with Patrick Mouratoglou (53, ex-coach of Serena Williams). It was an on-again, off-again relationship for a long time, which apparently came to an end after Rune’s US Open-Out at the end of August. He is currently guided by his youth coach Lars Christensen – with moderate success.
Convinced by Djokovic as coach
Although the Dane won the ATP 250 tournament in Munich in the spring of 2023 and was in the finals of two Masters tournaments (Monte Carlo and Rome), his form curve points downwards. Rune has lost eight of his last nine singles matches.
There is no doubt that Boris Becker could stop this downward trend. The German coached Novak Djokovic for six years and won six Grand Slam titles with the Serbian. (par)
