The drivers have actually already crossed the finish line of the Japan Cup Criterium, so there’s more action to come. But not in the way the organizers would like.
While coasting, Belgian cyclist Maxim Van Gils (23) of the Lotto-Dstny team hits his hand with full force against the helmet of his Greek competitor Georgios Bouglas (32, Matrix Powertag). Bouglas’ head moves forward for a moment, but fortunately the professional cyclist manages to avoid a fall.
Van Gils apologizes after the action
According to Belgian cycling journalist Benji Naesen, the blow was an act of retaliation because Bouglas had almost caused a crash in the previous race in which Van Gils was involved. But frustration about the worse ranking after the stage probably also played a role. The Belgian finished the race three places behind the Greek.
Van Gils has now apologized for his behavior: “I deeply regret what I did and have already apologized to the race jury,” he says. His Belgian cycling team Lotto-Dstny also deeply regrets the incident. The driver was punished with a mini fine of 50 francs and ten UCI points deducted. (Gentlemen)
