Porobic dies during the flight back to Europe from Hangzhou, China. The trainer is said to have complained that he was not feeling well before dying on the plane. The emergency landing and medical treatment came too late for the 66-year-old.

Petar Porobic was one of the big names in water polo: as a coach he won the world title with Serbia and Montenegro in 2005 and in 2008 he became European champion with the Montenegrin team after their independence. In addition, he also won two Olympic medals (silver and bronze), two World Cup medals (silver and bronze) and two European Championship titles with Serbia and Montenegro as part of the technical staff before taking over the team.
