Samuel Erni about his Airhook show: “I don’t know what happened to me”

Samuel Erni (32) admits that he practiced the airhook over and over again during training. For fun. But on Saturday evening, during his 3-0 win over SCL Tigers in Kloten, the fun suddenly turned serious. The Langnau defender tried the trick of loading the puck onto his stick behind the Kloten goal and from there placing it directly into the goal. And it worked.

“I don’t know what brought me there,” Erni said to Blick after the match with a broad grin. “Normally I don’t stay behind the opponent’s goal,” said the defensive back, “and I was actually going to pass the puck to Nolan Diem, but then he bounced back somehow and then I tried. I’m glad it worked.”

I didn’t dare cheer

Initially, however, he did not even dare to celebrate his spectacular and important goal, the 1-0, “because I could no longer even see the puck. It would have been very embarrassing for me if I had celebrated and the puck hadn’t gone in.”

Erni has never scored more than three goals per season in his professional career, which has lasted since 2010, and often – just like last season – it was only one. “Scoring goals is not actually my job; other people are responsible for that,” he says. It is all the more surprising that he is responsible for an airhook show.

Explanation for the revival

If he scores a goal this early in the season, he fervently hopes he can score more than one goal again. “But it doesn’t necessarily have to be another airhook,” says Thurgauer, who has played for the SCL Tigers since 2017.

For him, the focus is on something completely different than this personally crazy experience. Namely that Langnau has recovered after an initially difficult start to the season and heavy defeats (3:7 against Lausanne, 1:6 against Davos, 0:7 against Bern). And how: In the last five games, the SCL Tigers have scored points every time, never conceded more than two goals and won three times.

“We realized that we have to work together as a team and that can be difficult for any opponent. “It clicked for all of us,” says Erni, explaining the remarkable change.
