Certainly, some of Anthony Racioppi’s saves in Belgrade were absolutely Champions League worthy. Awesome! No question.
But the quality of a goalkeeper is not measured by individual scenes of brilliance. But over the whole 90, 96 minutes. And here Racioppi’s record is inadequate. At the start against RB Leipzig, he let Simakan’s header slide into the goal. Distracted, but it felt like there was snow on the ground.
And now the failure in the 88th minute, when the Geneva player, hoping for a cross, opens the near corner so wide that Bukari can easily punch in. Two games, two dollars. Not good.
No wonder, says coach Raphael Wicky, that Racioppi and goalkeeping coach Christoph Born will come to the conclusion that you should not speculate like that. Although: an analysis is not even necessary for this. That is obvious. No wonder Wicky always talks
about the fact that YB has very good goalkeepers, plural. After the match in Belgrade he does not explicitly say: Racioppi. He always includes David von Ballmoos.
Von Ballmoos’ return makes Racioppi nervous
Since the return of the five-time champion goalkeeper, Racioppi is no longer the same as before. Like in the outstanding phase that sabotaged YB’s original plan to put Von Ballmoos back in goal once he was 100 percent fit.
