Both coaches agreed in frustration after the Marakana draw: will Wicky now rotate from Ballmoos to the YB goal?

Rarely have two coaches agreed as much as after this 2-2 draw. Both Red Star coach Barak Bakhar and YB coach Raphael Wicky were disappointed with the result. So the emotional worlds were the same. The reasons vary.

“I’m disappointed because we didn’t win,” Bakhar said. ‘We weren’t good enough. Just being good at the beginning and at the end of the game is not enough.” The strong start showed that YB could not surprise him with a back four and usually only one striker.

Nervous YB goalkeeper
The air becomes thin for Racioppi

Wicky expects follow-up analysis from Racioppi

For his part, Wicky was proud of the way his team performed. On the other hand: frustrated. About the “totally unnecessary” first goal conceded, caused by a lack of concentration at a stage when they were doing well in the match. “Feelings are mixed.”

Firstly, Belgrade’s equalizer came late and secondly it was made possible by a move from the usually strong goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi. Yet he has no sympathy for his goalkeeper. But, “when he looks at it in the post-analysis with his goalkeeper coach, he knows that he is not allowed to speculate. However, that does not change the confidence I have in our goalkeepers.” A clear announcement that raises the exciting question of whether David von Ballmoos will be used in the YB goal on Sunday in the home game against Basel.

“We could have gotten more here”

The coaches also agree on the reassessment of the situation in the battle for third place in Group G behind Manchester City and RB Leipzig: nothing happened! “It was only the second game. Definitely, this was the one we really wanted to win. But now we go to Leipzig to get something,” says Bakhar. And Wicky when asked whether YB is now the favorite in terms of European winter: “That would mean that neither Red Star nor we will get a point elsewhere and that the only thing that matters is this one match in Bern. That’s the wrong mentality going into the other games. Again, it’s a good point away. But we’re frustrated because we felt like we could have gotten more here. We were close to victory. But at this level you need the perfect game to win.”

Fans and media judge Red Star harshly

And this one wasn’t it. Certainly not for Red Star supporters. They are completely satisfied, says a tall, bearded man in front of the stall selling plijeskavica, minced into flatbread, the Serbian national dish. Under this coach, seven games in a row were bad. “And then I lose a lot of money against Manchester City because I bet we would concede five goals in the second half against Manchester City, that’s how inferior we were. There is no development, nothing. And the match against the Young Boys was bad again. We are disappointed. Period.” Just like the Serbian media, which is very hard on their team.

U19 must wait one hour before departure

YB’s U19s were also disappointed as they lost 2-1. And after the main match I had to wait an hour in the belly of Marakana Stadium. Like the fanion team in 2019. But not because of Serbian celebrations. But because the car would have gotten stuck in traffic.
