Primoz Roglic will no longer drive for Jumbo-Visma in the future.

The threatened merger of the cycling teams Jumbo-Visma and Soudal-QuickStep will result in the first change of a top rider. Primoz Roglic will leave the Dutch team at the end of the season.

Roglic could not or did not want to say where he would go. “I can only confirm that I will be leaving the team.” The 33-year-old Slovenian’s contract with his current employer would run until the end of next season.

According to mutual confirmations, those responsible for Jumbo-Visma and Soudal-QuickStep are conducting negotiations about merging the two teams. It is not yet clear whether and, if so, when the merger will be realized. It seems doubtful whether this can happen before next season. With a view to the following year, unification is more likely.

Roglic is probably not the only change in the team

As a rider in the yellow-black uniform, Roglic won the Giro d’Italia and the Tour of Spain three times (2019, 2020, 2021). He also finished second in the Tour de France in 2020, after wearing the yellow jersey for eleven days.

Roglic’s announced departure will likely be followed by further castling if the merger goes through. With Jonas Vingegaard, Sepp Kuss or Wout van Aert on the one hand and Remco Evenepoel or Julian Alaphilippe on the other, there would be an oversupply of stars in the new team. (SDA)
