Nothing stands in the way of the title fight between the two world heavyweight boxing champions Oleksander Usyk and Tyson Fury. Both fighters posted a photo on social media showing their heads, the fight schedule and the word “signed.” The match, which is eagerly awaited in the boxing scene, will take place on December 23 or January 2024. The location will be Saudi Arabia.
The winner of this unification fight can call themselves the undisputed champion. The last heavyweight to achieve this was the British Lennox Lewis more than twenty years ago.
Fury faces Ngannou first
However, WBC champion Fury of Great Britain will also have an exhibition fight against Francis Ngannou, the former world heavyweight champion of mixed martial arts organizer UFC, on October 28 in Saudi Arabia. The undefeated Ukrainian Usyk, world champion of the IBF, WBA and WBO associations, successfully defended his titles against British challenger Daniel Dubois in Wroclaw, Poland at the end of August.
The fight between Usyk and Fury should have taken place last April, with London’s Wembley Stadium planned as the venue. But the negotiations failed despite an earlier agreement on fundamental issues between the two sides. After much back and forth, the fight is now happening – albeit late. (SDA/sbe)
