Sabine Hauswirth gives up her orienteering career.

The Swiss orienteers Sabine Hauswirth and Florian Howald are ending their careers at the end of the season. The soon-to-be 36-year-old from Bern and the four years younger resident of Winterthur will participate in their final international competitions in the coming weeks at the European Championships taking place in Northern Italy, which will also include the World Cup Final.

The duo has achieved several podium finishes in title fights. Howald won six World Cup and five European Championship medals, including European Championship gold in the relay (2016) and the sprint relay (2018). Hauswirth was also a safe bet for Switzerland in the (sprint) relay. In total, she won five World Cup and European Championship medals in these disciplines, including World Cup and European Championship gold in 2014. Her greatest individual success was winning the bronze medal in the long distance at the 2018 World Championships in Latvia. (SDA/sbe)
