Professional cyclist Nathan van Hooydonck (27), who helped Jonas Vingegaard to his second Tour victory in July, has to end his career due to a heart muscle defect. The 27-year-old caused a traffic accident last week when he felt unwell behind the wheel and subsequently had to be resuscitated.

The Belgian has now been able to leave the hospital and has had a pacemaker inserted. “I realize that I have been incredibly lucky,” said Van Hooydonck. “Things might have turned out differently if I had not received good help so quickly. I’m doing well now, but I still have to accept that this means the end of my professional career.” (SDA)
