A group of Panamanian researchers will participate in the Scientific Summit of the 78th General Assembly of the United Nations.
The summit will be held from From September 12 to 29, 2023 in New York, United States.
Panamanians will participate with a session called “The impact of migration in transit on the natural and social ecosystems of the Darién biogeographic region”which will be held on September 27, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (New York time).
They organize this Technological University of Panama (UTP)through the Center for Multidisciplinary Studies in Science, Engineering and Technology (CEMCIT AIP), and aims to address the consequences of human migration from a scientific perspective.
They will participate lawyer Noris Martínez and Dr. Indra Candanedo, UTP researchers; Mgr. Jean-Paul Carrera, researcher at the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies (ICGES); and Mgt. Diana Laguna, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of the Environment of Panama (MiAmbiente).
Also participating will be Dr. William Klinger Brahan, Director General of the “John Von Neumann” Pacific Institute for Environmental Research (IIAP) of Columbia, and Mgtr. Marilou Sarrut, PhD student at Université Paris Cité.
The activity will be moderated Dr. Mayteé Zambrano, CEO of CEMCIT AIP.
According to Zambrano, this session seeks to address the impact of human migration, “a situation that affects Panama and countries in the region, based on scientific studies conducted by researchers in the Darién region and surrounding areas.”
“In addition, there will be official data provided by Deputy Minister Laguna on deforestation, pollution, among other indicators,” he adds.
The three participating researchers are leading research projects in the province of Darién.
