The fact that Joaquin Ardaiz, top scorer in the 2021/22 Challenge League, played the entire preliminary round without a work permit sounds like a bad joke. But the point is even worse: it’s all okay for the league, Ardaiz always had the green light. For player qualification, the SFL does not check whether he has an official work permit.
That a football player violates the labor law that applies to every construction worker or bank employee in the country? Apparently it is not relevant to the competition, while it lays down meticulous specifications for stadiums, for example.
That has to change quickly. The future process seems very simple and logical: you are only eligible to play once the clubs have received the green light from the authorities.
Because if everything remains the same, Schaffhausen could certainly find imitators. So there are more clubs using players without work permits – because there is nothing to fear from the league and the four-figure fines like those imposed on FCS officials have no deterrent effect.
It is good that the league now wants to think about adjustments. It doesn’t really matter to the SFL that the authorities, depending on the canton, sometimes issue permits to transferred football players faster and sometimes slower.
