Diamond League final in Eugene: Lyles loses to Coleman

Christian Coleman wins the American match against Noah Lyles (Archivild).

Sprint king Noah Lyles, three-time world champion in Budapest, suffered a defeat in the 100-meter run during the Diamond League final in Eugene. Christian Coleman triumphed in the match against his American compatriot under calm conditions with the world’s best time of 9.83 seconds.

The 27-year-old Coleman, who finished a disappointing fifth in Budapest, is back with an eye on the Olympic Games in Paris. Because he missed Tokyo 2021 after a doping test, he was suspended after he became world champion in Doha in 2019 and was able to work his way up to number 1 in the sprint.

The man from Atlanta has held the world record (6.34) indoors (60 m) since 2018. In the first half of the race, almost no one was a match for him in the 100 meter distance. This was also the case with Eugene. Coleman is clearly in the front ahead of Lyles and Co. almost intercepted him.

Benjamin wrestles Warholm down

The two-day event on the west coast of the US was initially launched by American Rai Benjamin. The 26-year-old struggles with Norway’s Karsten Warholm on the home straight in the 400m hurdles, although he puts in a world-class performance in 46.53 seconds.

Benjamin is stopped after 46.39 seconds. The two fought a historic duel two years ago when Warholm, driven by Benjamin, reduced the world record to 45.94 seconds in the Olympic final in Tokyo.

Simon Ehammer and Jason Joseph will be in action late on Sunday evening, Swiss time. (SDA/sbe)
