View: Jan Cadieux, last summer you came into the locker room with a photo of the trophy. How do you prepare to defend your title?
Jan Cadieux: The goal is clear. We want to win and finish the season as high as possible. If that wasn’t everyone’s goal, we wouldn’t be here at all. But I agree that the rhetoric needs to be different at this point. Today it must focus more on our spirit, our hunger and our humility. I think everyone learned a lot about themselves this past season. That will help us.
How?
We know how to win. How to stay hungry for an entire season We experienced something very special. But now we start the new season and we have to be aware that the counters are back to zero. In a sense, everything we’ve done means nothing anymore. We shaped the history of the club and last season will live on in everyone’s memory. But with all due respect to the work everyone has done, let’s start again.
There is a risk of saturation.
I think a win can shape you. 50 percent of people will change for the better. You have experienced something wonderful and want to experience that feeling again. But the other half will tend to settle into a comfort zone. There is a sense of satisfaction that can lead to some complacency. I insisted that my players were in the good 50 percent. You must be willing to sacrifice yourself again. We know how hard it is to win. It will be important here that we stick to the motto that you journalists hate.
Just watch from game to game?
Yes, exactly. Winning a title is a long process. It is something that is patiently built up, day by day.
It sounds like you want to forget the past year.
The desire to forget is present in me. But I want to know what I can do better. It’s like a book. The one from last season is already closed. That doesn’t mean it no longer exists. But we’re on page 1 of the next book and everything still needs to be written. It would be a mistake to use last season as an example and try to do the same thing day in and day out. Even while training, I tried to change everything and introduce new things in the first few weeks so as not to fall into a routine.
In April you were at the top and now you are at the foot of the mountain. Are you afraid of progress?
Quite the opposite. This is the biggest challenge we have. I told my players that the end result is not the most important thing. What matters is how we manage our season by training well. It is also a way to leave a legacy. This legacy consists of our daily work. When a player comes to Geneva, he should feel that this group has a strong identity. And I’m not just talking about the ice rink. But also outside.
Do you feel like the players are still hungry?
We are only at the beginning of this process. But if you look at the greatest athletes who have won a lot of titles, they have found a way to be consistently good. It is precisely this ability to get back up that makes the difference between a good and an excellent athlete. And between a good and an excellent team. But I will judge the boys not only on their results on the ice, but also on their ability not to become complacent. I see the group at work and the first signals are very positive.
