A serious traffic accident occurred early Tuesday morning in Kalmthout, Belgium. Exactly in the middle: the Belgian professional cyclist Nathan Van Hooydonck (27).
The Team Jumbo-Visma driver was driving his car when he suddenly felt unwell, according to media reports. Eyewitnesses suspect that he may have had a heart attack, but this has not yet been confirmed. Due to the discomfort, Van Hooydonck lost control of his vehicle. Then a devastating collision occurred at an intersection, involving several other cars.
Van Hooydonck was seriously injured in the violent crash. He had to be resuscitated at the scene of the accident. The professional cyclist was conscious but still in critical condition and was taken to hospital.
Woman suffers from shock
Particularly tragic: at the time of the accident, his wife Alicia, who was eight months pregnant, was sitting next to him in the passenger seat. While her husband fought for his life, she escaped unharmed. She is also receiving medical treatment. The occupants of the other vehicles involved in the accident suffered only minor injuries.
