Andri Struzina becomes world champion non-Olympic lightweight singles in Belgrade. The 26-year-old from Zug divides the race well. In the third 500 m he converted the lead of 1.84 seconds over Italy’s Niels Torre into a lead of 2.03 seconds. He then managed to take the lead safely. Pole Artur Mikolajczewski secured bronze.
Struzina wins a World Cup medal for the first time after capsizing in the A-final a year ago. He has been on the podium after every race this season, topping the pack for the second year in a row after winning at his home World Cup in Lucerne. At the European Championships in Bled at the end of May, he had to settle for bronze.
The victory is a great satisfaction for Struzina. Because it was hard for him not to make the Olympic lightweight double sculls; this is inhabited by Raphaël Ahumada and Jan Schäuble. He drew a lot of strength from the frustration – and it is now paying off.
Four other Swiss boats will compete for medals on Saturday. (SDA)
