The Swiss delegation celebrates the first two medals at the U23 European Championships in Espoo, Finland. The 400 m runner Lionel Spitz won silver with a personal best time of 45.27 seconds, Melissa Gutschmidt sprinted over the 100 m in 11.33 to take bronze. Spitz’s performance in particular deserves a high rating. The 2022 Munich EM finalist came within three tenths of Mathias Rusterholz’s Swiss record. In 1996 in Lausanne he was the only Swiss to break the 45 second mark in 44.99 seconds.

Spitz and Gutschmidt won medals number 21 and 22 for Switzerland in the history of the U23 European Championships, which have been held since 1997. Two years ago, the Swiss delegation in Tallinn achieved four podium places.

The number 1 of the Swiss team in Finland is called Ditaji Kambundji. Third place in the elite of EM 2022 will aim for gold in the final of the 100 m hurdles on Saturday. She already did this at the U20 European Championships. (SDA/Mom)
