After the World Cup it’s over. Then Nati goalkeeper Gaëlle Thalmann (37) ends her career. The Swiss Football Association announced this on Thursday afternoon.
Thalmann made his international debut in 2007, making over 100 appearances for Switzerland and being the No. 1 goalkeeper in three finals. The World Cup in Australia and New Zealand will be her fourth major tournament. In addition, during her 20-year professional career, after her first stop at Rot-Schwarz Thun, she has played since 2021 for clubs such as Hamburger SV, Grasshoppers, Basel or, most recently, Betis Sevilla.
Motivated for the last tournament
“I am very happy to play my second World Cup and share my last matches on the world stage with you,” Thalmann wrote on Instagram. “I am very much looking forward to the tournament and am very motivated to contribute to the good performance of our national team and to represent our jersey with honor.”
At the same time, she announces what will happen to her after her career. Thalmann will be responsible for women’s football at FC Lugano SA from September 1 and will coach the goalkeepers of Team Ticino.
