Arrival in the Leventina. The HC Ambri-Piotta Girls sign three foreign attackers for a year.
For Jenna Kaila (21), Ambri is the first station outside her native Finland. The American Theresa Knutson (27) has much more experience. Most recently, she played in Germany and was top scorer in the league last season.
The team introduces the Swede Fanny Rask (32) as the third newcomer. With her comes a name in Swiss women’s ice hockey already known from the National League. She is the sister of Victor Rask (30), who played for Fribourg-Gottéron last season and signed a two-year contract with SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers in April.
A year without hockey
“Women’s hockey is great,” said Victor Rask after moving to Switzerland. Before that, he also followed the Swedish women’s competition during his stay in North America (2011-2022). Because his sister Fanny has been storming there since 2007. Partly thanks to her brother: Victor supports her financially so that she can fully concentrate on hockey as a professional.
That’s not the only thing that makes the career of Sweden’s longest-serving national player so special. In 2020, Rask sat out a season after her dream of playing hockey full-time fell apart. “I was allowed to test it and I am very grateful for it. But it’s not entirely sustainable to live off someone else,” she said in an emotional Instagram post at the time.
After a year, she returned to the ice and worked part-time. Now the leap abroad follows. In the fall, Victor still hoped that his sister would come to visit him in Switzerland. Now the siblings should see each other more often. (bir)
