Flag up! Football may be on the brink of an offside revolution.

The offside rule is one of the most important football rules and has always been a source of debate. But now it could come to a major reform.

As the English “Mirror” writes, FIFA is testing an important rule change proposed a few years ago by former Arsenal coach Arsène Wenger (73). The new rule states that from now on a player is only considered offside if his whole body is in front of the penultimate defender and the ball.

Half of all disallowed goals are said to be regular

Previously, it was sufficient if a part of the body that could be used to score was in front of the penultimate defender and the ball. The investigation of a FIFA evaluation shows that 50 percent of all goals (!) that were disallowed by the VAR for offside would have been regular with the new rule.

According to FIFA official Christos Kanellas, the aim is to make the sport more spectacular: “The idea was born to promote a more attacking game, to increase the chances of scoring and to make the game more exciting.” President Gianni Infantino (53) is also in favor of the idea.

The new rule is now being tested in Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden. However, probably not in the top leagues of these countries. (byl)
