Beijing 2022: Michelle Gisin on her way to Olympic gold in the combination.

From the 2026 Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, a speed specialist and a technician from one country will work together in the combination. The IOC responded to a proposal from the FIS, which will introduce this format in the coming seasons. The new discipline is scheduled for the first time in mid-January with a speed and a technical race in Kitzbühel.

Switzerland’s Michelle Gisin and Austria’s Johannes Strolz, winners in Beijing in 2022, are the last combined Olympic champions in the old format until further notice.

More changes planned

In ski jumping, men’s team jumping is abolished. Instead, in 2026 there should be the so-called super team with only two starters and three rounds. Last winter, the competition format was tested for the first time during the World Cup.

In Nordic Combined, the team sprint with two starters replaces the previous team competition with four athletes. In cross-country skiing, all distances must be equal for men and women. (SDA)
