After 50 years of abstinence, Ferrari won the 24-hour battle with its big comeback at Le Mans. 81 seconds ahead of top favorite Toyota, who for years have won everything clear in the long distance world championship without serious competition.

The circumstances have now also scared the hell out of Formula 1. Shortly before the Le Mans race, the Japanese was asked to add 37 kilos of extra weight. Ferrari only had to use 24 kilos more weight.

Shot in the knee

And why? The headstrong organizers wanted to give Peugeot and Porsche the chance to build on their old successes in France at the 100th anniversary.

The shot missed badly. Peugeot (8th) and Porsche (9th) were lapped several times in the hypercar class (16 entrants), even with their most powerful cars.

And Toyota rants about anti-competitiveness. The DTM was also not happy with extra weights. Winners should never be penalized.

No BOP in Formula 1

Now the money counters at American owner Liberty Media have certainly thought about whether this handicap formula could also slow down series winner Red Bull.

BOP (Balance of Performance) is the “magic word” to improve performance balance. GP boss Domenicali (formerly Ferrari team boss): “BOP will never exist in Formula 1. They would be against the DNA of our series!”

PS: More than half of Ferrari’s Le Mans winning team consisted of employees ex-team boss Binotto had to sack for adhering to Formula 1’s budget cap.
