In the Italian town of Lugo in the province of Ravenna, the water was up to your waist on Thursday.

People have died, thousands have lost everything, Berset wrote in Italian. “Our thoughts are with our neighbors and we express our solidarity with those affected and their families.”

Heavy rains had caused flooding in the Emilia-Romagna region this week. At least 14 people died in flooding or landslides. The areas around Imola, Forli, Cesena and Ravenna were hit hard. The places on the Adriatic coast that are especially popular with tourists, such as Rimini, got off relatively lightly.

Hundreds of emergency services from the fire brigade, civil protection, military and other organizations and countless volunteers from all over Italy have been working for days in Emilia-Romagna. The highest alert level will continue to apply in many places in the coming days.

The situation has recently come to a head, especially around the city of Ravenna. After it started to rain again on Friday, rivers overflowed their banks again. The water flowed directly to the city center via a highway. Many residents of the city on the Adriatic Sea were asked to leave their homes and police officers went from door to door. According to the media, more than 20,000 people were evacuated in Ravenna alone.

In a district of Sarsina municipality, more than 300 people were cut off from the outside world. It has been reported that the Canale Emiliano Romagnolo, an artificial canal that cuts through the region, has been flooded in some places. People living nearby were asked to move to higher floors. Workers meanwhile try to close broken dams with excavators.
