With their environmental responsibility initiative, the Young Greens want to make combating the climate crisis a priority in the constitution. The Federal Council rejects the idea. (archive image)

In its statement on Wednesday, the Bundesrat refers to the various provisions of the federal constitution that already exist today and guarantee sustainable development. The initiative would lead to “serious interference with individuals’ freedom of choice,” he writes.

The Young Greens’ popular initiative “For a Responsible Economy Within Planetary Boundaries (Environmental Responsibility Initiative)” calls for a constitutional article under which environmental protection is now the highest priority. In addition, environmental pollution in Switzerland must be reduced within ten years to such an extent that the limits of the planet’s resilience are respected.
