In a press release, the party emphasized that the commitment to climate and nature has been the cornerstone of green politics since its foundation. On this day, they therefore wanted to toast to 40 years of commitment to climate protection, a society based on solidarity and intact nature.
The Greens were often a step ahead of the times: they had been advocating for marriage for everyone 23 years before it was introduced. And already in 1990 they had asked the Bundesrat for a strategy to reduce CO2 emissions.
It is precisely these times with a worsening climate crisis that showed how urgently green commitment is needed for a sustainable and green future, said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in her video message to those present.
As Bernhard Pulver, the first Secretary General of the Greens and current candidate for the Bernese Council of States, explained in the Festzeitschrift, representatives of social movements had repeatedly tried to make it to parliament since the 1970s.
The first regional Green party was founded in Neuchâtel in 1971. In 1979, Daniel Brélaz was the first Green to be elected to the National Council in the canton of Vaud. According to the Festzeitschrift, he was also the first Green in a national parliament in the world.
But these moves had to be bundled “to be stronger together,” Pulver said. In 1983 the time was ripe for a Swiss Green Party. Since then, the party has grown steadily: according to the party, its voter share has risen from less than 2 percent since its foundation to 13.2 percent in the last election in 2019, becoming the fourth largest party in Switzerland with 14,000 members.
International guests also took part in the celebration, such as the Co-President of the European Greens in the European Parliament, Terry Reintke, or the Co-President of the European Green Party, Mélanie Vogel. Their presence is also a sign of the party’s international network, the statement said.
