Weighing 2.5 kilograms, Chihuahua lady Ferun almost weighs in a handbag. Otherwise, it doesn’t fit the lap dog stereotype at all. Because Ferun is a bedbug detection dog – the only Chihuahua in Europe.

Ferun owes this extraordinary career to Basel couple Alain (48) and Shirin Scheidegger (41). The two have been training dogs for 15 years and are now freelancers with their own company, Pro Cane Hundecoaching. The mini dog Ferun happened to be with them by accident. The owner could no longer take care of him. “It almost forced us,” Shirin says. Then he was surprised at how lively and eager the little dog was: “He loves to smell as passionately as a big dog and likes a big dog.”

And the Scheideggers know what they’re talking about. The couple trained professional police hunting dogs to track explosives or drugs, but now they work with amateur dogs. In principle, any dog can learn to find objects: from explosives, coins, morels to turtle eggs.

The smallest and most popular dog breeds in Switzerland

Ferun’s specialty is finding bedbugs. Shirin Scheidegger used to train many dogs in this and still tests and validates her four-legged friends in this tracker discipline. It is not easy to detect biting pests. Chihuahuas are especially useful in certain situations. For example, in a noble hotel: “If I walk in with Ferun, no one will think she’s a bedbug sniffing dog, she’s perfectly camouflaged and ideal for hotels,” says Shirin.

Swiss people love Chihuahuas. Switzerland has 28,750. No breed of dog is more popular. But they would also be underestimated. You don’t trust them to have sniffer skills, Scheidegger says. But the mini bitch proves that little four-legged friends are just as smart as their big ones. The performance of their noses is as good as a sheepdog, the difference is durability. «Chihuahuas are not working dogs, they let you know when they are tired and then they stop doing it. A working dog would rather fall to death than show he can’t continue.” Ferun stops earlier.
