The Federal Council must investigate how the residual heat from data centers can be better used.

The National Council wants to advance the energy transition with five energy initiatives. The motions and propositions were submitted by the National Council Committee for the Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy (Urek-N). The grand chamber accepted all five proposals. The three motions will now go to the Council of States. The Federal Council requests their acceptance.

According to the National Council, the legal framework must be created so that the share of renewable gas in the gas supply can be gradually increased. This must be done with a “minimum quota or financial incentives”. The SVP opposed this order. She feared a further rise in energy prices.

The National Council also wants expansion and modernization projects for hydropower plants to be carried out even if no agreement can be reached on the residual value agreement. No one in the National Council opposed this initiative.

Make better use of heat from data centers

The large chamber also advocates the promotion of combined heat and power plants to secure power supply in winter. The Greens criticized this initiative. Given the climate crisis, it is wrong to invest in a new fossil fuel infrastructure.

In addition, according to the decision of the National Council, the Federal Council should examine measures to make better use of the residual heat from systems such as data centers. After the approval of the Grand Chamber, this postulate goes to the Bundesrat.

Finally, the National Council approved a postulate according to which the Federal Council should submit proposals for the future regulation and promotion of the conversion of excess electricity into synthetic energy sources. There was no objection to this either. (SDA)
