The first strike of Alain Berset (51): On June 13, 2021, 60 percent of voters said yes to the new Covid 19 law. Barely five months later, Berset’s second coup follows: in November 2021, the electorate accepted the amended Covid law with a 62 percent yes.

In the middle of the corona pandemic, the population agreed with the course of the SP minister of Health. Will he succeed in the third prank?

Extend law until mid-2024

On June 18, the voter will decide on the Covid law for the third time. The opponents of the measures successfully held the referendum against the bill. They are annoyed that the legal basis for various corona measures is being extended until mid-2024.

For example, the federal government can continue to issue Covid certificates if necessary again, for example for traveling abroad. The Swiss Covid app can also be reactivated if necessary. The federal government can also oblige employers to protect individuals who are particularly at risk and, for example, to allow them to work from home. With an extension, medicines against serious Covid diseases can still be imported and used, even if they are not yet approved in Switzerland.

If no, on the other hand, these provisions will expire in mid-December 2023. A scenario that is quite possible, since Corona has largely disappeared from everyday life.

Media conference at 2 p.m

A scenario that President Berset wants to prevent. He will explain why the Covid law is still necessary on Tuesday at a media conference at the start of the vote.

In addition to Berset, Anne Lévy (51), director of the Federal Office of Public Health, and Graubünden government councilor Martin Bühler (46) will also appear. During the corona pandemic, Bühler made a name for himself throughout Switzerland as a cantonal crisis manager and mass testing pioneer.

The media conference starts at 2 p.m. Blick reports live.
