The abdication for former federal council member Elisabeth Kopp († 86), who died on Good Friday, will take place at her request in her long-standing home community Zumikon in Zurich.

The abdication on Wednesday, however, poses major challenges to the community. According to the “Tages-Anzeiger”, Zumikon last had to plan such a major event when the FDP politician was elected to the Federal Council in the fall of 1984 – and as the first woman ever.

Only 200 places

About 700 mourners are now expected. The church in the Zumikon community, which has a population of about 5,600, can only accommodate 200 guests. The funeral service will be broadcast in a triple gymnasium, in which another 500 seats will become available.

Since many mourners are likely to arrive by car, two large parking lots on the edge of the community should be designated. From there, guests are taken to the village center by a shuttle bus. This is made possible by the Intercommunity School in the Waltikon district, which, in addition to one of the parking spaces, also provides its school buses including driver.

«Arrive on foot»

In addition to the numerous political celebrities arriving, according to the “Tages-Anzeiger”, some special guests are also expected. Among them are likely sitting federal councilors, for example. A special approach concept has been developed for them. The Samaritan Association and the fire department are present for medical emergencies.

To avoid a traffic jam, the municipality placed an advertisement in the “Zolliker Zumiker Boats”. In it she calls on the grieving residents of Zumik and Zolliker to please come on foot or by public transport.

«Safe, smooth and respectful»

According to the “Tages-Anzeiger”, it is still unclear who will bear what costs. The municipality cannot yet say what the financial consequences of the politician, who died at the age of 86, are for himself.

But finances are not the problem here. “First and foremost, the focus is on enabling a smooth, safe, discreet and respectful farewell to Ms. Kopp’s family, friends and companions,” said City Clerk Thomas Kauflin. (pt)
