You are exceptionally early. The signatures against the second pillar reform have not all been collected yet, if the middle women have already adopted the yes slogan. “We will support the pension reform”, chairperson Christina Bachmann-Roth (39) confirmed yesterday’s decision of the members.
The SP and trade unions held a referendum against the bill because they thought it would worsen the situation of women. The law leads to pension losses of up to 270 francs per month, the left says.
The middle women, on the other hand, see the reform as a success in terms of equality policies. Because the current system disadvantages people on low incomes and part-time workers – both of which apply to women more than average. “We have been demanding for years that the coordination deduction be scrapped because it penalizes part-time work,” says Bachmann-Roth. “Now a good solution has been found by insuring 80 percent of the salary.”
With the early version of the slogan, the middle women want to lead by example: “Towards those leftists who want to abolish the three-pillar system. And also to the address of the women’s umbrella organization Alliance F.” Members are divided in their assessment of the BVG reform. The co-chairs of AllianceF had approved the bill in parliament – much to the chagrin of the social democrats. As a result, the SP women suspend their Alliance F membership.
Now the question is how the umbrella organization will position itself: yes slogan or vote release. For Bachmann-Roth it is clear: “We must not abstain.”
But if the middle women now force a yes from the umbrella organization, violent arguments are inevitable. Bachmann-Roth hopes that the SP will stay on board. “When the SP women leave, they weaken women’s concerns,” she says. “Particularly the social democrats have done a lot for women’s rights.”
Forgiving words – but they should barely be enough to fill the deep trenches.
