Musk wrote on Twitter over the weekend that it could be used to serve customers who don’t want to buy a permanent media subscription. In the past few years, there have been several services offering retail media content, but they have not been able to build the business model.
Musk has had many arguments with media outlets during the six months he owned Twitter. For example, journalists were temporarily blocked after reporting on a Twitter account that posted the flight movements of Musk’s private jet.
A major controversy erupted after Twitter tentatively flagged public broadcasters like NPR in the US and BBC in the UK as state-funded at Musk’s behest. NPR and Canadian broadcasting group CBC suspended their Twitter activities in protest. (SDA)
