According to Greens president Balthasar Glättli, his party will only approve emergency loans to bail out Credit Suisse under conditions of sustainability. (archive image)

“If the climate was a bank, the Federal Council would have saved it a long time ago,” party chairman Balthasar Glättli told the media in Bern on Tuesday. During the bank rescue, the sustainability aspect was ‘criminally pushed into the background’.

The Greens would therefore only agree to the additional credits if they are linked to sustainability goals. For the future, a legal basis is needed to ensure that state rescues can only take place under sustainable conditions.

According to the Greens, the large international banks in Switzerland do not do sustainable business – either in terms of corporate culture or climate. Between 2016 and 2020, Credit Suisse and UBS alone invested nearly CHF 120 billion in the fossil fuel industry.
