The referendum on the hunting law failed. The committee sees the reason for the failure as the lack of support from the major nature conservation organizations and the political parties. The referendum also received little attention in the media, according to a statement by the group “Wolf Shepherds”. The newspapers “CH-Media” had reported earlier on Tuesday.
The environmental associations Pro Natura, WWF Switzerland, Birdlife Switzerland and Wolf Switzerland Group had refrained from holding a referendum against the revised hunting law. A coexistence of humans and wolves is possible on the basis of the revised law, they say.
Criticism of the Bundesrat
The referendum commission criticizes the Federal Council: after the no to the hunting law in 2020, the Swiss government failed to “develop a new, modern and nature-friendly hunting law”. According to the “Wolf Shepherds” group, the revision represents a major step backwards in species protection.
The ‘wolf herders’ criticize what they consider to be the vague wording of the hunting law, which offers a lot of leeway to approve the shooting of wolves. They also criticize the possibility of pre-emptive killings. Several smaller nature conservation organizations have joined forces in the group. (SDA)
