From 2024, the car tax is also due for electric cars.

The Federal Council wants more money from Tesla drivers. From 2024, electric cars will also be taxed at four percent. Until now, electric cars have been exempt from the motor vehicle tax, which applies to all passenger cars. The Federal Council wanted to promote electromobility in this way.

Not anymore. The federal government feels that more and more people are driving electrically. “For the year 2022, the tax loss amounts to about 78 million francs, for the current year a loss of about 100 to 150 million francs is expected,” says a press release.

Tax exemption no longer necessary

Because the number of imported electric cars has increased sixfold since 2018, a tax exemption is no longer necessary. “If the tax exemption continues, the tax shortfalls for the years 2024 to 2030 are estimated at two to three billion francs.”

The proceeds of the new tax will be used for the national road fund.

The amended Regulation is now being consulted. This will last until mid-July, after which a final decision will be made. (brother)
