Tree thieves are at work in Endingen in Aargau. At the end of January they sawed down an oak tree. That in itself would be nothing special. But the felled tree is the so-called Dreifuss oak – which was planted in honor of former federal councilor Ruth Dreifuss (83).

The action is apparently not a coincidence, but a political act, as the “Aargauer Zeitung” reports. Because it is already the second tripod oak that falls victim to unknown persons.

Already the second tree

The first oak tree in honor of the SP woman was planted in 1999 when Dreifuss was in power as Federal President. The social democrat is a resident of Endingen and of Jewish descent. The first tree was felled a few years ago. After a new planting, he has now hit the second tree.

“Such a deliberate act is incomprehensible. We deeply regret this material damage,” says non-partisan mayor Ralf Werder in the “Aargauer Zeitung”. He suspects a political background.

The oak is replaced

The perpetrators of the two hijackings have not yet been identified. The municipality has declined to file a complaint.

Forestry company Surbtal has been commissioned to plant a new oak tree in the spring. (Russian)
