Moutier will move from the canton of Bern to the Jura on January 1, 2026.

What the agreement looks like remains unknown for the time being. The draft concordat should be finalized in the coming weeks. The two cantonal governments want to present it in mid-May at a joint media conference in Moutier BE and thus open the consultation.

In March 2021, voters in the small Bernese Jura town voted to move to the canton of Jura. Money issues have since given much food for thought. The two governments disagreed on the regulation of financial flows from the financial and burden-sharing arrangement.

“Quick resolution was important”

At the end of 2022, the federal government was asked to mediate. “It was important to find a solution quickly, so that the change in the municipality of Moutier can be completed on January 1, 2026,” says the statement of the Federal Public Service Justice and Police (FDJP).

The agreement on the financial settlement was reached on Wednesday evening during another meeting of the law delegations of the two cantonal governments with the federal government. The Minister of Justice and Jura Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59) chaired the tripartite conference.

Referendums in both cantons

At the end of the consultations, the concordat must be signed by the two governments and then submitted for approval to the two cantonal parliaments. A referendum will then be held in the cantons of Bern and Jura.

In 2025 it will be up to the federal parliament. They must then approve the federal decree on the transition from the municipality of Moutier to the canon Jura. (SDA)
