A new Prime tower? At least not on the lake shore, calls for an initiative in the city of Zurich.

The voters in the city of Zurich vote on whether or not to allow high-rise buildings on the banks of the lake and the Limmat. The “River Protection Initiative” was created with 3,104 valid signatures, the city council announced on Wednesday. This requires 3000.

The initiative requires that only homes with a maximum height of 25 meters may be built on the lake shore. According to the text of the initiative, taller buildings should keep a distance of 150 meters from the bank. A minimum distance would also apply to the Limmat.

«Endangered habitat for animals»

The committee consists of representatives of the Greens, the GLP, the AL and the center. With their initiative, they are targeting the planned new high-rise regulations of the city of Zurich. The proponents of the initiative argue that the lake and the Limmat areas are the main local recreational areas for the residents of Zurich. “High-rise buildings near the coast make it more difficult for the population to access the coast, reduce sunshine and damage animal and plant habitats, which are already under threat,” the initiative text said.

The city had previously announced that no high-rise buildings should be built on the lake anyway, nor on the banks of the Limmat in the city center. Outside the center they are allowed on the Limmat between Swissmill Turm and Hardturm, up to 60 meters high. On the banks of the Sihl, homes would be allowed to be up to 40 meters high.

According to the city, high-rise buildings of more than 80 meters certainly need a design plan. That is the case today and will also be maintained with the new guidelines for high-rise buildings. (SDA/h)
