Since today, the National Council has been debating the future electricity supply of our country. Essentially, it is about securing the power supply with renewable energy sources. However, if Mr. and Mrs. Schweizer had their way, existing nuclear power plants (nuclear power plants) would have to remain connected to the grid or even new ones would have to be built. This is the conclusion of a study carried out by research institute Sotomo on behalf of Blick.
55 percent of the respondents believe that nuclear power plants are important for eliminating the electricity bottleneck. Even 64 percent do not want the existing nuclear power plants to be taken off the grid by the end of 2037 at the latest, as the Greens demand. 56 percent even believe that Switzerland should quickly plan new nuclear power plants.
The initiative committee of the people’s initiative “Electricity for everyone at any time (stop power cuts)” is also pleased with the result of the survey. The initiative was launched in the late summer of 2022 and aims to lay down in the constitution that the power supply must be guaranteed at all times – if necessary, new nuclear reactors must also be built.
«Power supply without nuclear energy does not work»
“The result shows that with our initiative we have a finger on the pulse and want to solve an urgent problem, namely securing the power supply. The Swiss know that the electricity supply in Switzerland does not work without nuclear energy,’ says Vanessa Meury (26) of the initiative committee when asked by Blick.
According to Meury, the best proof that the Swiss energy strategy has failed is the reserve power station in Birr, which runs on oil, is very expensive and enormously harmful to the climate.
That the Swiss want security of supply and climate protection is also apparent from the status of collecting signatures for the initiative. “We already have about 70,000 signatures. As we continue to collect strongly, we are already starting to certify the signatures,” says Meury.
No place for waste from a new nuclear power plant
In addition to the fact that the construction of new nuclear power plants would take decades, research at the national cooperative for the storage of radioactive waste (Nagra) also shows that there are more nuclear power plants in the planned nuclear storage facility in the Nördlich Lägern area in the Zurich Unterland! Because: Nagra will submit a general permit application in 2024 for a storage facility that offers space for the waste from five reactors.
When asked by Blick, Nagra spokesman Patrick Studer said: “We are planning a repository for the waste from the five existing reactors, as well as from medicine, industry and research. This is also laid down in the general permit.”
Approval granted by the Federal Council
From a geological point of view, Nördlich Lägern would have room for a much larger storage facility, Studer continues. But: You submit an application for a storage facility that collects the waste from the existing nuclear power plants.
The Federal Council will issue the permit for the camp. This, in theory, can decide what he wants. Parliament and, if necessary, the people, if there is a referendum, must support the decision taken.
