Swiss private companies invested CHF 16.8 billion in research and development last year. Research expenditures have therefore continued to grow, the Federal Bureau of Statistics (BFS) wrote on Monday.
The pharmaceutical industry led the way in 2021 with expenditures of 6.2 billion Swiss francs. Companies specialized in research and development accounted for 2.2 billion francs and 1.5 billion francs for the machinery sector. However, research spending has not increased in all sectors.
According to a study by the FSO and Economiesuisse, the pharmaceutical industry, research companies and the information and communication technology sector invested more in research than in 2019. For example, investments in the food and machinery sectors fell. (SDA)
