This could cost climate activists a lot. A member of Renovate Switzerland carried out a paint attack on the Federal Palace shortly after noon in early February. The 48-year-old spray-painted two doors of the north portal with orange paint and then sat on the ground in front of the entrance. But not for long: the police made short work of it and took the man away a few minutes later.
The action is not without consequences: the Federal Office for Buildings and Logistics (BBL) has filed a criminal complaint against the man, Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter (60) said on Monday at the request of SVP Landraad Martina Bircher (39). . The cost of repairing the damage is approximately 13,000 francs. These costs are – at least temporarily – paid by the BBL.
At the same time, FDP federal councilor Keller-Sutter made it clear: “If the activist is convicted of damaging property, the amount of the damage will be claimed from him.”
Climate emergency as reason
The organization said at the time that the paint attack was the culmination of a series of warnings through which Renovate Switzerland had drawn attention to the government’s slow response to the climate crisis.
“Because I marked the Federal Palace with orange paint, the Federal Council and Parliament can no longer hide. “They are responsible for the climate catastrophe,” says the activist. The government would rather build new highways than take measures to reduce CO₂ emissions. (dba)
