You can save a lot of money by changing your health insurance provider and/or insurance model. It’s no secret; but many people are still lazy about change.

One mistake: “Axa Change Report 2024” shows how valuable a change can be. Axa analyzed switching behavior based on more than 44,000 key insurance changes made through the Axa exchange service in autumn 2023. Finding: Those willing to change will save an average of 515 francs per capita in 2024, or a total of 23 million francs. Last year the average savings was 477 francs.

Latinos optimize more than German-speaking Swiss

The population was best optimized in the cantons of Geneva (756 francs on average), Basel-Land (604 francs) and Vaud (573 francs). Savings were once again lowest in the canton of Uri (383 francs).

This is what average savings look like depending on age, gender and canton of residence.

Overall, Romans and Ticinos optimized significantly more than German-speaking Swiss. First of all, because they often change the model when they change their health insurance. In Ticino, the largest amount (1,778 francs) was saved by the exchange of health insurance and exemption. Axa calculations show that, in general, replacing the cash register, model and franchise at the same time saves four times more than replacing the cash register alone. However, 58 percent only changed their safe. This is probably because many have already chosen the top franchise.

Axa has also observed a trend towards high (CHF 2,500) and low (CHF 300) franchises, as well as a continuing trend towards alternative insurance models such as TelMed and GP.

Young people benefit the most

Axa thinks the biggest savings potential is among young adults aged 19-25. In 2024, they will save almost 22 percent more on basic insurance premiums than groups over 26 years of age. This figure is notable, as average premiums for boys across Switzerland are around 30 percent lower than for boys over 26.

“Young people often have basic insurance that their parents took out for them as a child,” says Niklas Elser, head of private services and healthcare at Axa. That’s why comparing and changing is especially valuable to them.

Women were able to save slightly more than men overall, an average of 519 francs, while men were able to save 511 francs. However, by age group and gender, those with the highest savings potential were men aged 19 to 25; They saved 719 francs.

The winner was EGK

According to Axa, the “winner” of the changing season was the health insurance company EGK. In other words, it had the best ratio between new customers and cancellations. CSS, Concordia and Aquilana also recorded large numbers of visitors. When it comes to layoffs, KPT was hit the hardest, ahead of Swica, CSS and Assura.

EGK emerges as the winner of the 2023/2024 change season.

This doesn’t need to mean anything. Elser recommends taking a closer look again this year, when the replacement season begins, as “costs are likely to increase further in 2024.”
