Ukraine under President Volodymyr Selensky and Switzerland with Federal President Viola Amherd are planning a peace conference. Involving China could pave the way for talks with Russia.

Good news for Federal President Viola Amherd (61) and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis (62): China welcomes Switzerland’s efforts to organize a summit for peace in Ukraine. This was reported by the newspaper Le Temps.

Last Tuesday, the Chinese envoy to Ukraine, Li Hui (71), met with Swiss diplomat Gabriel Lüchinger (46) in Brussels. On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA), he conducts technical discussions in preparation for the peace summit. It was the first conversation between the two.

“Constructive conversations”

The next day, the Chinese Foreign Ministry released a statement. It writes about “constructive discussions” in preparation for a peace conference in Switzerland. Beijing will “continue to work with the Swiss side and the international community to reach a ceasefire and end the fighting.”

The EDA is pleased with this development. Nicolas Bideau, EDA media spokesperson, told “Le Temps”: “This is a good signal.” He praised the clarity of Chinese statements on the urgency of finding a path to peace in Ukraine. During a first meeting between Cassis and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi (70) in Beijing last month, the Chinese side had not yet publicly mentioned the Swiss initiative.

The integration of the Middle Kingdom would be an important step. The hope is that, thanks to China, we can one day get Russia to the negotiating table. For Switzerland, the main goal is to convince Moscow to hold peace talks.

First meeting despite Russia’s refusal

Bern is therefore still aiming for a summit next summer – and is holding talks with several countries. This is despite Russia’s categorical refusal to address the issue of such a peace conference. Moscow reasons that Switzerland is no longer neutral.
