The number of identity card withdrawals due to illness and disability will have increased sharply in 2023. (symbol image)

The last peak for these types of withdrawals was reached in 2017 with 6,004 cases. With 21,133 cases, the number of revocations of foreign driving licenses has also increased significantly in 2023 (+17.8 percent compared to 2022). This is evident from the annual statistics of the Federal Roads Office (Astra), which were published on Tuesday. Here too, too high speed was usually the reason.

Overall, ID card revocations increased slightly by 0.9 percent (80,015), as shown in statistics on administrative measures. In 58.7 percent of these recordings, excessive speed, drunkenness or endangering third parties due to inattention were the reasons for the withdrawal of the ID.

Less decline in new drivers

However, a decline was noted in both the revocation of student driving licenses (-3.2 percent) and in the revocation of probationary licenses (-6.1 percent), as Astra further wrote.

In 2023, 75,712 people obtained their new passenger car license. This means that the decline compared to the previous year continues. In 2022, 83,626 new drivers were counted.

As of December 31, 2023, around 6.3 million people in Switzerland had a passenger car driver’s license, up 0.9 percent from twelve months earlier.
