The annual siren test will take place throughout Switzerland on Wednesday. (archive image)

The siren test will take place between 1:30 PM and 4:30 PM, the Federal Office for Civil Protection (Babs) wrote. The population does not need to take any measures.

The general alarm is tested, a regular rising and falling howling sound that lasts for one minute. The water alarm is being tested in the nearby areas under dams. The signal consists of twelve deep, continuous tones of twenty seconds duration. Last year, according to Babs, 99 percent of the sirens worked properly.

A message is also activated in all cantons via the Alertswiss warning app. This message does not activate a siren sound on the smartphone, as is the case with an alarm message, Babs writes. According to Babs, the app is actively installed on around two million mobile devices.

In addition to national languages, available emergency plan languages include Portuguese, Albanian, Spanish, Serbian, Croatian, Turkish, Arabic and Ukrainian. A simple language version is also available for German, French and Italian.
