The party’s decision in favor of the centre-right list was clear. The general meeting took place behind closed doors. The GLP’s participation was controversial within the party.
For the first time, the center-right camp is joining forces on a broad list. The goal is to win a second seat in the five-member city council.
FDP members unanimously approved the list last week. In the middle, the decision was made at board level. The SVP members’ yes on February 12 is considered certain. The EPP, as the smallest partner, will decide on February 14.
The municipal elections in Bern are proportional elections. The system prefers large blocks. The Red-Green-Centre Alliance (RGM) came to power in 1992 because a broad party alliance agreed on a common list. RGM has held four of the five seats since 2016 and is clearly overrepresented in terms of voter shares.
The parties in the center-right camp have so far competed with each other separately or relied on smaller alliances. At the beginning of this year, party leaders agreed on a joint list to wrest at least one seat from RGM. The currently strongest party in the centre-right camp is the GLP.
The municipal elections in Bern will take place on November 24. At least three municipal council seats will be filled. Mayor Alec von Graffenried (GFL) and municipal councilor Marieke Kruit (SP) will compete again. Councilor Ursina Anderegg (GB) has already been nominated. State councilor Matthias Aebischer (SP) is expected to follow at the end of March.
In the centre-right camp, the candidacy of municipal councilor Florence Pärli (FDP) has already been determined. The nomination meetings for the four remaining parties are still ongoing. National councilor Melanie Mettler and Bernese grand councilor Marianne Schild are being discussed as possible GLP candidates.
