The residents of Valais will vote on the introduction of a cantonal minimum wage. A corresponding popular initiative has been established. “The collection of signatures has gone very well and we are satisfied with the feedback from the population, which gives us hope for the further course of the struggle,” said Adrien d’Errico, chairman of the initiative committee and co-chairman of the Labor Party Party. Party of Valais to submit the signature.
The initiative sets a minimum hourly wage of 22 francs, which corresponds to approximately 4,000 francs per month for a 42-hour working week. For agriculture, a deviation of 18 francs is planned, i.e. about 4 francs more than the current hourly wage, so as not to endanger a sector known for its “economic fragility”.
Five cantons have a minimum wage
In Switzerland, five cantons have now introduced a minimum wage. The Canton of Neuchâtel was a pioneer. The population there agreed to the introduction of a minimum wage of 20 francs initially in 2011. This took three years before Swiss voters decisively rejected a national minimum wage initiative at the ballot box.
Since then, several cantons have introduced a minimum wage: Jura, Geneva, Ticino and Basel-Stadt. In other cantons, initiatives have been tabled, as was recently the case in Fribourg, or signature collections are underway. Last June, voters decided that a municipal minimum wage should apply in the city of Zurich. (SDA)
