Now Andreas Glarner (61) has to bleed financially. The SVP National Council of Aargau is being prosecuted for the distribution of a manipulated video featuring Basel Green National Councilor Sibel Arslan (43).
The incident involving a fake election video, which took place shortly before the October 2023 federal elections, resulted in a groundbreaking verdict, the ‘Tages-Anzeiger’ reports. Glarner was therefore sentenced to a fine of 3,842.50 francs. The judgment consists of 1,500 francs in court costs and 2,342.50 francs in legal costs for Arslan.
Arslan complained
The video, published on Platform X and Instagram, looked deceptively real, but was produced using artificial intelligence. Arslan was attributed with political statements that contradicted her actual beliefs. The phenomenon, known as deep fake, describes deceptively real content that is manipulated by technology.
Arslan quickly responded and filed a lawsuit alleging violation of her personal rights. Just one day after publication, the Basel-Stadt Civil Court issued an order requiring Glarner to remove the video within four hours. He complied with this order, but the legal dispute was not over.
“It was worth the fun for me”
After the verdict on November 20, Glarner waived any legal defense, accepted the removal of the video and thereby indirectly admitted that he had violated Arslan’s personal rights. He told the “Tages-Anzeiger” about the verdict: “It was worth the fun for me.”
Although Arslan has decided not to take further action in civil court, her lawyer has not ruled out additional legal measures. According to the article, Arslan is currently exploring the possibility of filing a criminal complaint against Glarner. Various criminal offenses may apply, including slander, slander or misuse of identity.
